CEOs will join President Trump in UK to announce the deal

Nvidia and OpenAI will reportedly pledge billions of dollars in investment for UK data centers as part of US President Donald Trump’s visit to the country next week.

The chip firm and AI lab will be teaming up with data center provider Nscale on the project, according to a report from Bloomberg that cites people familiar with the plans who asked not to be named.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia CEO, and Sam Altman, his counterpart at ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, are set to join President Trump on his UK trip. The data center deal will form part of a larger package of investments into the UK by US companies, Bloomberg said.

Nscale revealed plans for a UK data center in Loughton, Essex, in January. It is set to come online in 2026 and offer 50MW of capacity, though the site has a 90MW power allocation. In total, the company is planning to spend $2.5 billion ($3bn) in the UK.

In a separate announcement made at London Tech Week, Huang said GPU giant Nvidia would be working with Nscale to deploy 10,000 of its Blackwell GPUs in the UK by the end of 2026, presumably at the Loughton data center, though he didn’t specify a location. It is unclear if the upcoming announcement is separate from this plan.

The three companies are already working together on Stargate Norway, OpenAI’s data center in the Nordic nation. It will be located in Kvandal, outside Narvik, northern Norway, and will have an initial 230MW of power, with an additional 290MW potentially available in the future. The data center will target to deliver 100,000 Nvidia GPUs by the end of 2026, with plans to expand “significantly” in the years ahead.

It is not clear if the UK data center scheme will fall under the Stargate umbrella, though OpenAI has previously said the brand will be used for all its future digital infrastructure projects. Altman’s firm opened a UK office in July, and agreed a deal with the UK government to work together on AI and digital infrastructure projects.

DCD has contacted Nvidia, Nscale, and OpenAI for comment on the report.

News of the investment will be welcomed by the UK government, which has been trying to encourage data center developments across the country since it took office last year.

It plans to set up AI Growth Zones, areas where data center projects will benefit from incentives, including relaxed planning restrictions and better access to power.
