Mantra Data Centres, the India-based hyperscale and colocation services provider, has announced plans to expand across India, building new data centres in urban centres across the country.
Mantra has committed $1 billion in resources which will be spent on a string of data centres, each with 20 MW capacity. The new data centre facilities will be located in Mumbai (2), Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata.
The company’s plans to expand are based in part on an increase in global investment in data centres, which passed $100 billion in the first half of 2021 – with India as the largest recipient of investment dollars after the U.S. There is also an extremely positive growth outlook for the data centre market in India, which is driven by the increasing adoption of data-intensive technologies like IoT and AI; as well as growth in internet access and cloud computing across the country.

Chainani, Co-founder and Managing Director of Mantra Data Centres, said of the expansion plans, “MDC is very well-positioned for success in this growing market, with a strong management team, green sourced energy, first-in-class stakeholders, on-time delivery, and the right locations to create a network of Tier III & IV data centres across India.
“Our aim is to help our customers grow seamlessly in the midst of the digitalization of India.”
The new data centre network will provide 140 MW power, with 11,500 racks across 640,000 sqft of equipped space. The data centres will be Tier III certified by the Uptime Institute, both for Design and Constructed Facility. They are also expected to be green certified at the Gold level, with a power usage efficiency (PUE) of 1.5.
Demand for data centre services has grown in India over the past few years, propelled by the increased availability of technology, across the country, as well as governmental initiatives including Digital India. The upcoming 5G launch in India is driving interest in data centre facilities as well.
Data centres are also key to the growth of enterprise-level services in India, as data residency regulations require an increase in capacity to accommodate compliance.
