NEW DELHI: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)’s recommendations on satellite-based low-bit rate connectivity will boost innovative industry applications such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, among others, said satellite communications (satcom) industry body SiA-India.
“The recent recommendations from TRAI on low bit rate connectivity through satellite will pave the way for fresh talent to emerge and the existing industry will be emboldened to take the proverbial leap into newer spheres of Space economy. It is a very commendable set of recommendations,” said Anil Prakash, Director General, SIA-India.

“The recommended licensing framework impacts issues of the spectrum, terminal sizes, entry fee, license fee, bank guarantee, NOCC charges, spectrum usage charges, royalty fee, etc. It will promote technology-neutral solutions promoting optimisation and growth of the industry,” said Prakash.
The sector regulator’s move has also been welcomed by the Broadband India Forum (BIF), an industry body representing the likes of Google, Facebook, Cisco, Hughes, Intel, among others that said providing satellite-based connectivity for low bitrate applications will drive mass adoption of satcom in the country.
