Speaker Biographies
Stan Shih
Stan Shih is Co-founder and Honorary Chairman at Acer, and a Director since July, 1979. Mr. Shih is a Member of the Board at TSMC and Nan Shan Life Insurance. He’s also Representative Director for Hung Rouan Investment Corp., and a Member of the Investment Committee at Acer.
Mr. Shih co-founded Acer in 1976 under the name Multitech, and served as Chairman and CEO until his initial retirement in 2004. He returned in November 2013 to help lead Acer through its third corporate transformation. In June 2014 he stepped away from the daily operations and became Honorary Chairman.
Mr. Shih had the honor of being selected as One of the 10 Most Outstanding Young Persons in Taiwan in 1976, The Most Outstanding Young Engineer in Taiwan in 1981 and the 1st One of the 10 Most Outstanding Young Persons in the World in 1983. He is a former Chairman of the Asia Business council and a former International Advisory Board (IAB) member of the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), a Governor of the Asian Institute of Management, and an Honorary Chairman of the Taiwan Excellent Brand Association. After retiring from Acer in 2004, he acted as the Chairman of National Culture and Arts Foundation from 2011 to 2016 to build up the platform between Arts and Business actively.
BusinessWeek named Mr. Shih one of its 25 Top Managers of the Year in 1996. Time featured him in its article “60 years of Asian Heroes” for turning Taiwan into a PC-manufacturing powerhouse. In 2007, Mr. Shih, as Taiwan’s Special Envoy, attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Summit in Sydney, Australia. For his outstanding, long-term contributions, the President honored him with the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon in October 2011 and the 1st Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) Laureate in 2012. He awarded “Taiwan Cultural Collaboration Medal” by the Ministry of Culture in 2021.
Mr. Shih earned a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and honorary Ph.D in electronics engineering from the National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Technology by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and an Honorary Doctor of International Law from the Thunderbird School of Global Management and Honorary Doctorate of Arts by Tainan National University of the Arts.
StanShih Foundation was established by Mr. Shih in 1988 for the interests of Taiwan’s long-term sustainability and competitiveness. The Foundation has in recent years been actively involved in promoting the altruistic principles of Wangdao. Wangdao is about leadership in organizations large and small, and based on the three core concepts: value creation, the balance of interests, and sustainable development. It also calls for leaders to pay equal attention to the “Six-aspect Values,” which are: the visible values of tangible, direct, present; and the invisible values of intangible, indirect and future.
To sustain in a flat world faced with global competition, the key to Taiwan’s future lies in talent cultivation. StanShih Foundation has actively contributed in the works of talent development, with social responsibility as core, and the ultimate goal of making concrete contribution to society.
Mayor Kate Gallego
Mayor Kate Gallego has spent her career working to find solutions to complex problems. Prior to being elected as Mayor, she served for five years as the City Councilwoman for District 8, a large district covering much of South Phoenix. Her record of proven results includes leading the campaign to pass Phoenix’s citywide transportation plan through 2050 and working to ensure equal pay for equal work. While on the council, Mayor Gallego helped make Phoenix a leader in job creation and worked with police and firefighters to improve public safety and make neighborhoods more secure.
In March 2019, Mayor Gallego became the second elected female Mayor in Phoenix history and the youngest big-city Mayor in the United States. Mayor Gallego is passionate about building a Phoenix that works for everyone, including her two-year-old son, Michael, and she led the effort to partner with AARP to make Phoenix a city where seniors can thrive. She believes everyone should have access to cutting edge medical care and has led on expanding Phoenix’s biomedical campus. Mayor Gallego is working to grow the city’s economy, create jobs, and stand up for the city’s core values.
Prior to being elected Mayor to the city that she loves, Mayor Gallego worked on Strategic Planning and Economic Development for the utility company, Salt River Project. She worked to attract new companies and jobs to Phoenix. Mayor Gallego graduated from Harvard University and earned an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
Senator Mark Kelly
Mark is U.S. Senator for the State of Arizona.
Senator Kelly is the son of two police officers, and he attended public schools from elementary school through the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. As a naval aviator, he served on the aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Midway and flew 39 combat missions in Operation Desert Storm. Senator Kelly was later selected as an astronaut in 1996 in the same class as his twin brother Scott. He flew his first of four missions into space in 2001 aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour and retired from the Navy and NASA after commanding the final flight of Endeavour in 2011. Senator Kelly was sworn into his Senate seat on December 2, 2020 to finish the term of the late Senator John McCain. He lives in Tucson with his wife, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.
Matt Salmon
Matt Salmon is a Special Advisor on International Affairs at ASU. Formerly, he represented the 5th District of Arizona for five terms in Congress. Matt served three terms before honoring a self-imposed term limit and leaving Congress in 2000, at which time he worked as a consultant to ASU on matters related to education policy. He returned to Congress in 2012 and was re-elected in 2014 and retired in 2016.Salmon was a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, serving as chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, and as chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific. In that capacity he has led numerous delegations to China.
From 1977 to 1979 Matt lived in Taiwan as a Mormon missionary and speaks fluent Mandarin. During his tenure in Congress, he introduced several pieces of legislation to expand Taiwan’s international stature, such as the bill to include Taiwan in Interpol. In 2017, Matt joined GTI’s delegation to Taiwan for a conference with Taiwan Think Thank. Matt graduated from ASU in 1981 and holds a Master’s of Public Administration from Brigham Young University.
Dr. Peter Wonsok Yun
Commissioner, Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), Policy Advisor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Korea, Executive Director, Global Chamber Seoul (and Busan, Daegu, Daejeon and Gwanju), CEO and Founder, Meta Globe Corp, Co Chair, Global Korea Business Forum (Korean National Assembly)
Dr. Yun is Executive Director of Global Chamber Korea, with 5 main chapters. He is CEO of Meta Globe and Co-Chair of Global Korea Business Forum. He is an expert in Market Intelligence, Presidential Economic Diplomacy: Trade Development and Trade Show, In-Out bound Investment including M&A.
Dr. Yun has successfully served international posts such as Deputy Director of KOTRA Miami, U.S. (1991-1994); Head of Commercial Section (KOTRA) of Korean Embassy Nairobi, Kenya (1998-2001); Chief Trade Commissioner of KOTRA Vancouver, Canada (2003-2007); Head of KOTRA Busan, Korea (2008-2009), Chief Trade Commissioner of KOTRA, Los Angeles (2010-2012). Mi Jeong Hibbitts
CEO at Robert & William and Executive Director, Global Chamber Baltimore/Washington
An accomplished international business and marketing expert, Mi Jeong Hibbitts is the CEO of Robert and William, a strategic consulting firm based in Maryland, USA, specializing in US-Asia market entry. She came to the US in 1997 and has decades of expertise and experience. With a diverse background in international trade, marketing, advertising, journalism, finance, technology, and the US government, she offers strategic counsel and practical support for innovative companies of all sizes, including startups, engaged in cross-border trade and investment between the US and Asia.
Additionally, Mi Jeong serves as the Executive Director for Global Chamber® Baltimore/Washington DC, where she drives efforts to grow cross-border trade and investment for members in various industries.
She holds a degree in English Language and Literature from Ewha Womans University and an MBA from the University of Hawaii.
Dr. Sihoon Ryu – President, Korea Innovation Center Washington DC
Dr. Sihoon Ryu brings his 17 years of hands-on venture investment experience in the mobile, semiconductor, and automotive industries to his role at KIC DC as President.
Prior to joining KIC DC, Sihoon worked as an investor at SKTelecom Ventures, Daedeok Venture Partners, and Hyundai Mobis Ventures.
He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Yonsei Univ. and a Corporate Valuation certification from Wharton Executive Education.
Mike Patterson – Partner at Spencer Fane
Mike Patterson helps businesses navigate corporate, compliance and securities matters. He has extensive experience in domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic alliances, equity and debt offerings, foreign direct investment, distribution, agency and licensing matters, and market entry strategies. He efficiently resolves legal matters by identifying key issues, focusing resources, and executing on a plan.
Mike also regularly advises U.S. and foreign clients in connection with the establishment, structuring, and compliance for international operations, including the establishment of international distribution networks, in the semiconductor and other industries. Also known as “Miguel” after a decade-long stint living and working in Central America, he reads, writes, speaks, and negotiates in Spanish. In addition, he has done legal work for clients in Canada, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
Gunjan Bagla
Gunjan has over 25 years of global sourcing, engineering, and marketing experience. He has held senior positions in technology sales and marketing. Bagla has managed teams sourcing products and services from China, India, Japan, and the rest of Asia. He began his career as an engineer for Larsen & Toubro, Bangalore, a prominent Indian industrial firm. Mr. Bagla came to the U.S. and later worked as Director of Program Management for Tandon Computer.He is the founder and Managing Director of Amritt, Inc. Gunjan gives his unique insight into many of the news events, business developments, and business trends affecting India and those companies who partner with India today in a more informal format. Based in California, he is the author of the acclaimed title “Doing Business in 21st Century India: How to Profit Today from tomorrow’s most exciting Market” published in 2008 by Warner/Hachette Books and was the technical editor on John Wiley’s Doing Business in India for Dummies (2007). He created the executive seminar “Business with India” for Caltech, the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California and has also taught executives at the Thunderbird School of Global Management, Phoenix, Arizona. These books and seminars are a direct result of his work as an India Business Consultant for major Western clients.

Dan Lachica
Dan is the President of Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation, Inc. (SEIPI), the association representing the electronics industry which accounts for 62.3% of total Philippine commodity exports and employs over 3M direct and indirect workers.
Dan has over 40 years of senior management experience in semiconductors, electronics and consumer goods manufacturing, 16 of which were in front-end semiconductor wafer manufacturing in Silicon Valley. Prior to his early retirement from the Lopez Group of companies, he was a SVP with First Philippine Holdings Corp. and concurrent President of the group’s electronics/solar manufacturing companies. He returned to the Philippines in 1996 as the expatriate Managing Director of Iomega Corporation of Utah. He also held leadership positions at Hewlett Packard in California, Motorola in Arizona, American Microsystems Inc. in Idaho, and Procter & Gamble in the Philippines.
Dan is an expert in world-class initiatives such as Six Sigma (Black Belt & U.S. IQPC Judge), Balanced Score Card, and Total Productive Maintenance. He had received several awards including the Dr. Joseph Juran National Medal from the Philippine Society for Quality, and Outstanding Electrical Engineer from the University of the Philippines (U.P.). He has BSEE from U.P. Diliman, an MBA from San Jose State University in California, and a DBA (With Distinction) from De La Salle University. Dan is a Philippine Science High School (PSHS) alumnus and currently sits in the Board of the Philippine Science High School System (PSHSS). He is a member of the Advisory Councils of DOST’s SEI, ITDI, and AmCen. For DTI, Dan sits in the Export Development Council ExCom and Co-Chairs the EMB NCTPPS and the Electronics TWG. He is the Chief of Party for the USAID AMDev Program.
Robert “Bob” McCollar – International Business Development Manager at Loudoun Economic Development
Robert “Bob” McCollar serves as the international business development manager for Loudoun Economic Development. He works to promote the department’s services throughout the international business community, and acts as a resource for the county and Commonwealth of Virginia to attract, grow and maintain international business in Loudoun.
A Loudoun resident for almost 20 years, Bob is a licensed attorney with 30 years of executive business development and legal experience, working with international businesses in a diverse range of markets. He serves on the Board of Directors for the British American Business Association, and is a member of dozens of Chambers of Commerce and various Trade Groups. He is a co-founding member of the Dulles International Global Group, and is a frequent speaker at various Embassy events in Washington, D.C. He has a Bachelor’s degree from Trinity University and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from William Mitchell Law School.
Melissa Mannino, Partner, BakerHostetler
Melissa Mannino, co-leader of the International Trade and National Security team and a Chambers ranked attorney, is an experienced export controls, foreign investment (CFIUS) and economic sanctions practitioner. Her broad based national security practice includes advising a range of companies, from start-ups to industry leading businesses, across a variety of sectors on compliance with the U.S. export control and economic sanctions laws and regulations and the CFIUS laws and regulations. She also represents clients through each stage of proceedings before the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Treasury and State on export control, CFIUS and sanctions matters.
Melissa previously served as the Chief of the Enforcement and Litigation Division, Office of Chief Counsel for Industry and Security, at the U.S. Department of Commerce. She leverages her government and private practice experience to provide strategic and practical legal advice to clients.
James Perry, Associate, BakerHostetler
James Perry has a well-rounded and broad international trade practice assisting domestic and international clients with trade-related concerns before various U.S. Government agencies, including the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Bureau of Industry and Security and other partner government agencies.
James advises clients in a multitude of industries on U.S. Customs laws and regulations that directly impact clients’ importing activities in the U.S., ranging from HTSUS classification, country-of-origin determinations and marking requirements, customs audits, EAPA investigations, international trade agreements (USMCA/KORUS) and other trade remedy matters involving Section 201, 301 and 232 tariffs. Drew is ExDir for the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives – a network of 250 Texas-based Chambers – and serves as Sr. Advisor for Reshore Supply Chain for the Texas Association of Business. Arno Merkle, Ph.D – Co-founder and CEO, Crystal Sonic, Inc.
Arno Merkle, Co-founder and CEO of Crystal Sonic is an accomplished leader in the capital equipment and deep tech industries. With a robust background leading product teams and business development at renowned technology companies including Carl Zeiss, Tescan, Xradia, and XRE, Arno has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of advanced electron- and X-ray microscopy systems across various sectors. His strategic contributions led to successful exits at startups Xradia in 2013 and XRE in 2018. Michael N. Kozicki, Ph.D., FNAI – Co-founder of Densec ID
Michael Kozicki joined Arizona State University in 1985 from the semiconductor industry and is currently Professor and Graduate Program Chair in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering and Senior Global Futures Scientist at ASU. His research, which has been cited nearly 17,000 times, focuses on the development of novel materials, processes, and devices in applications ranging from information storage to digital identity. He has over 70 US and several dozen international patents granted, which have led to commercialized technologies including Conductive Bridging Random Access Memory (CBRAM), achievements which resulted in his election as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2015. In 2021, Dr. Kozicki co-founded Densec ID LLC, an ASU spin-out company that was formed to develop and commercialize Dendritic Identifier oracle technology for supply chain transparency and track-and-trace applications in markets ranging from agri-food to microelectronics.
Akihiko Oma

Akihiko Oma has taken a leadership role with NuFlare Technology. Previously he held the role of president and CEO for Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC) based in Irvine, California, with world HQ in Tokyo, Japan. Under his leadership, TAEC has focused on expanding Toshiba’s HDD, discrete semiconductor and system LSI businesses in key application areas such as IoT, in-vehicle systems, data center, automotive and industrial.
As a 35-year Toshiba veteran, Mr. Oma has held a variety of management, planning, marketing, and sales positions, including his prior role of senior vice president of planning and operations at TAEC. During Mr. Oma’s six year tenure with Toshiba Electronics Asia, Ltd. in Hong Kong, his responsibilities included managing the intricacies of Toshiba’s international operations for electronic components. He then returned to Japan to manage global planning for Toshiba’s semiconductor business, developing the strategy and direction for the company’s global sales and marketing teams. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree as a graduate from Waseda University in Japan.
Consul Kelly Moeur
Consul Moeur is a member of the Japan Business Association of Arizona, and member emeritus of Global Chamber.
He was a founding member and past Principal of Arizona Gakuen School. Arizona Gakuen is a non-profit organization that teaches academic subjects in Japanese language to Arizona children.
In 2015, Consul Moeur was recognized by the Government of Japan for service in promoting international friendship and understanding.

Carolin Gey

Carolin has over 25 years of experience building upon her early work in European health care and wellness. Armed with a working knowledge of how the European community conducts business she located to the United States in 2002. There she has been responsible for the start up of several businesses in the health care/wellness, sports, and manufacturing industries that have international ties. Common to these companies was her success in building business partnerships between the US and non-US companies. Carolin’s focus in each of these enterprises was in company management, US and international distribution, product development, and branding.
Carolin brings a unique diversity of formal education in business management and entrepreneurial ownership in growth driven companies. Her formal education comes from her home country of Germany where she graduated with a Masters Degree in business economics from the University Erlangen-Nueremberg. Subsequently she received an Erasmus scholarship and wrote her thesis during the time she studied at the University of Sevilla in Spain. She has been engaged in multiple international business cultures and speaks fluently in German, English, and Spanish.
In February 2020 Carolin was inaugurated as the Honorary Consul to the Federal Republic of Germany in the state of Arizona. She also is on the Global Chamber Phoenix Advisory Board. She lives with her husband and son in Scottsdale, AZ.

Odette has taken on the role of Head of Government Affairs at ASM USA since 2024. Before emigrating to the USA, Odette finished Amsterdam Law School and started working for the Dutch Federal Government. As a Public Policy Adviser with the Department of Homeland Security & Interior Affairs, she rotated several positions. In 2016 she made the step back to public service with City of Phoenix including Community and Economic Development Department as an Economic Development Manager (Int’l & National Attraction/Retention).
Since Summer 2020 Odette was appointed as the new Honorary Consul of the Netherlands in Arizona. Odette has two children (Ashton who is 17 and Savannah who is 16), is an avid Team Handball player, loves hiking, good food and serving the community in various capacities. She is actively involved in Arizona Forward, the state’s leading sustainability organization driving major initiatives for quality of life and economic growth in Arizona. And recently she was elected to the Diplomatic Corps Arizona Executive Board, as Board Secretary, and named to the Global Chamber Phoenix Advisory Board.
