India has set its ambitions high for what organizers are calling “the first artificial intelligence summit to be held in the Global South.” The event was to take place from Monday, February 16, to Friday, February 20, in New Delhi.

After the meeting in the Grand Palais in Paris in February 2025 and, before that, the one in the British Bletchley Park estate in November 2023, where Alan Turing’s team cracked German codes during World War II, the international AI gathering is now taking place at the Bharat Mandapam conference hall in New Delhi. This vast venue features a circular conference center and exhibition halls with hundreds of company stands, blending the style of a United Nations conference with Paris’ VivaTech trade show.

Almost 250,000 people were expected to attend. For the official meetings on Thursday and Friday, about 15 heads of state were scheduled to participate, including French President Emmanuel Macron, co-chairing with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as leaders from Brazil and Spain. About 30 CEOs were also expected to attend, such as Sam Altman of OpenAI, Sundar Pichai of Google, Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Arthur Mensch of Mistral
