FM Sitharaman said contracts for laying of optical fibres will be done in the next fiscal through a public-private partnership mode.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman paved way for the rollout of 5G telecom services by the private players in upcoming fiscal year 2022-2023 reiterating that the 5G spectrum auction will be conducted this year. ‘Telecommunication in general, and 5G technology in particular, can enable growth and offer job opportunities. Required spectrum auctions will be conducted in 2022 to facilitate rollout of 5G mobile services within 2022- 23 by private telecom providers,” Sitharaman announced Tuesday in the Budget session.
The Finance Minister also said contracts for laying of optical fibres will be done in the next fiscal through a public-private partnership mode, in her presentation of the Budget 2022. “While an announcement on implementing Bharatnet optical fibre cable contracts through PPP has been made, an expeditious approach is needed to avoid delays given that the PPP model has witnessed mixed experience in other infrastructure sectors,” Peeyush Vaish, Partner and Telecom Sector Leader, Deloitte India said
In addition to that, the government also announced a PLI scheme within the telecom sector to strengthen the 5G ecosystem. The scheme will focus on design-led manufacturing as part of the Production Linked Incentive Scheme. “While the details of the PLI for design led manufacturing in the 5G space are awaited, it could be broadened beyond manufacturers to the TSPs and telecom infrastructure players,” Deloitte India’s Peeyush Vaish said in a statement.
‘“PLI for 5G is a step in the right direction and will blend seamlessly with PLI and DLI Scheme for semiconductor schemes already in place,” Nischal S Arora, Partner, Nangia Andersen LLP. The government announced its flagship PLI scheme in the last budget at an outlay of Rs 1.97 lakh crore. The scheme has now been in operation for 14 sectors including telecom, and technology.
