Nvidia and SpaceX Explore AI Data Centers In Space
Huang revealed that the companies’ engineering teams are working together on a new server design and computing architecture intended to operate both in space and on Earth.
“One particular new market that we’re going to go explore together is putting data centers out in space,” Huang said.
Musk has previously said SpaceX aims to launch Nvidia-powered AI computers into orbit in 2027. The project involves adapting Nvidia’s Vera Rubin NVL72 computing system for space-based operations.
The broader Starmind vision could eventually involve up to one million satellites functioning as an orbital computing network, although that figure represents a proposed maximum constellation rather than a firm deployment commitment.

Starship and Launch Costs Remain Key Challenges
SpaceX’s plans depend partly on Starship, its reusable rocket intended to make launching large amounts of hardware more economical. However, Reuters has reported that the rocket’s development timeline has lagged behind Musk’s original targets.
Musk has said initial satellite launches could begin in the fourth quarter of 2027, with significant deployment planned for 2028.
While the partnership could open a new market for AI computing, the cost of launches, satellite maintenance, power and thermal management remain major challenges for orbital data centers.
