6G technology isn’t anticipated to launch until the end of this decade at the earliest, with many in the industry predicting commercial launches in 2030.

However, vendors such as Ericsson, Nokia, and Huawei have been working on the technology for a number of years.

“We have barely scratched the surface with 5G which will overtake 4G and become the dominant mobile technology after 2027 and, with 5G Standalone and 5G Advanced, realize its transformative potential over the next several years,” said Ekow Nelson, VP and head of global customer unit for e& at Ericsson Middle East and Africa.

“At the same time, we have started the proactive approach to 6G research with our partners to shape the next generation of mobile networks. Collaborating closely with e& UAE, we aim to leverage our shared expertise to drive progress in the development of 6G for the United Arab Emirates, and the wider region.”

In 2022, Ericsson said it would invest millions of pounds over the next decade into its 6G research in the UK, noting at the time that it would employ 20 dedicated researchers, as part of the 6G mobile research.

More recently, the European Commission’s Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) confirmed it received an additional €130 million ($138m) in EU funding for 6G research projects.

Other telcos including NTT Docomo and SK Telecom have also previously signed 6G MoUs.
