AI has truly become a growth sector in the space of just a few months. The latest data, reported by Omdia during a market study, showed that Microsoft was investing massively in this sector in 2024. At that time, the brand would have acquired nearly 500,000 AI GPUs from NVIDIA. These purchases make the company the Chameleon’s biggest customer!
500,000 AI GPUs purchased from NVIDIA by Microsoft!
More concretely, Omdia reports that in 2024 Microsoft was spending colossal sums on dedicated GPUs designed for artificial intelligence. In fact, its spending reached $30 billion. A substantial sum demonstrating the company’s trust in the AI business.
The company’s aim is to equip the servers in its data centre. This allows the company to continue its research in the field, but also to feed its models already in place. In any case, all told, this represents quite a quantity of GPUs, since in the course of 2024 the company acquired almost 500,000 AI GPUs. These include H100s, H220s and H20s.
In terms of ownership, Microsoft was the company that bought the most GPUs of this type… At least from NVIDIA. In fact, during the year Microsoft bought almost twice as many cards as Chinese giants ByteDance and Tencent. In terms of money spent, it was also the company that invested the most, with Amazon in second place (~$26 billion) followed by Google (~$22 billion). In contrast, the Chinese are between $5 and $10 billion.
However, we have learned that exports of NVIDIA GPUs could well fall, or at least stagnate. Little by little, these big companies are investing directly in in-house chip design. Amazon is developing its Trainium chips, while Meta is working on its MTIA.
