India adds over 10 GW of solar, wind capacity in the first nine months of 2021

From January 2021 till September 2021, about 8,811 MW solar capacity and 1,246 MW of wind capacity was added in India, according to a recent report by JMK Research.

It said this was about 280 per cent and 101 per cent, respectively, higher compared to the same period previous year.

“The key reason for the significant increase is the commissioning of delayed projects in this period that were supposed to get commissioned earlier but got delayed because of COVID-19 disruption,” said the report.

It added that according to the data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) till September 2021, India’s RE installation capacity reached 101.53 GW. Solar energy contributed about 46 per cent share in the total RE segment, followed by wind energy, bioenergy and small hydro.

“Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra added maximum solar capacity in this period accounting for 68.53 per cent of all solar installations. In wind segment, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka contributed about 98.66 per cent of India’s total wind installations,” said the report.
