IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Rahul Varshney, Country Manager India, Statkraft
India has announced the National Hydrogen Mission and we are going to have the Hydrogen policy announced soon. Do you think the government is taking the right steps needed to ensure the fuel finds its place in the national energy transition story?
India’s energy transition story will play an important role in helping the country tackle issues like energy security, air pollution etc. India is doing the right thing by bringing it right on top of the development agenda. We feel very positive about the various moves announced around this sector. The way NITI Aayog has come up with proposals around the requirement of Hydrogen is fairly pragmatic. Green Hydrogen will hold a lot of promise going forward. India will be a key player in the Hydrogen space, given the fact that the country’s demand is likely to be very high. And demand growth is the key for any business to come up. Also, now that the will of the policy makers is also clearly seen and there is talk of a Green Hydrogen purchase obligation and the obligated entities are also being defined, there is a big market for Hydrogen in sectors like Fertilizer and Oil & Gas to enable the transformation of Green Hydrogen in India. This is significant, around 6 metric tonne or so. While we graduate on this, a lot of companies will pick up the Hydrogen story and try to optimize this over the next decade or so. There will be a big export market for Hydrogen and, among the global markets, countries like India, Chile, and Brazil are expected to be the cheapest markets for Hydrogen. India will emerge as a key player for Europe and Asia, in terms of export market for Hydrogen. In fact, Hydrogen will be a more promising story for India than even the battery industry.
