Jio trials HD virtual reality meeting using homegrown 5G NR and 5G core

The trial also leveraged both enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and 5G’s low-latency capabilities.

Reliance Jio said it has trialed immersive high-definition virtual reality (VR) meeting using its indigenously developed 5G NR radio and 5G core network (5GCN).

The trial also leveraged both enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and 5G’s low-latency capabilities.

5G’s high speed and low latency characteristics allow augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), smart factories, Industry 4.0, 5G smart cities, improved surveillance among others.

“By using Jio’s indigenous 5G NR radio and 5GCN, we have trialled an immersive high definition VR experience. This trial leveraged both eMBB and low latency capabilities of 5G to deliver the end user experience. It is truly exciting to experience the possibilities that come to life using 5G, and the potential transformation that is possible!” said Aayush Bhatnagar, Senior Vice President at Jio Platforms, in a Linkedin post on Friday.

Jio, in its 5G VR trial demonstrated HD multi-party VR video calling with participants physically wearing the VR headsets while others joined from the cloud; collaborative screen sharing and presentations across VR participants, and white boarding/sketching using VR control and live sharing.

Cloud participants also performed laptop screen share with real-time video playback.

The VR trial also allowed changing the perspective of the virtual conference room in real-time, in addition to VR hand controls and feedback, and VR meeting live recording and uploading to the cloud for future reference.

Jio claims to have developed its homegrown 5G stack which will also be exported to foreign markets once the competence is proved at a pan-India scale.

5G trials: Vodafone Idea says achieved peak speed of 3.7 Gbps on mmWave bandThe telco is conducting 5G trials on Govt. allocated 5G spectrum in the cities of Pune (Maharashtra) and Gandhinagar (Gujarat), along with its technology vendors.

Jio is running 5G trials in Navi Mumbai and had recently achieved end-to-end network slicing on its indigenous 5G standalone core.

The network slicing function enables innovative use cases in the cloud and private 5G deployments at the edge. The telco had completed its cloud gaming trial in a lab set-up earlier this year.

Meanwhile, its closest competitor Airtel had recently conducted the first cloud gaming session in a 5G environment, as part of its 5G trials in Gurgaon’s Manesar using the mid-band spectrum provided by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Airtel has a 5G deal with the Tata Sons. Under the deal, Airtel will pilot and deploy the Tata Group’s locally-developed solutions as part of the telecom operator’s 5G rollout plans for India.

The Tata Group is also looking to develop its own 5G solution and export it to the global markets.

This follows Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL)’s announcement that it has achieved peak speed in excess of 3.7 Gbps on the mmWave spectrum band, in Pune city. The telecom operator also recorded peak download speeds of up to 1.5 Gbps in the 3.5GHz band 5G trial network, in Gandhinagar and Pune city.

Telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw last week said the government may auction the 5G spectrum in February 2022, and may also try for a January 2022 timeline.
