NEOM calls on engineering firm to support the export of green hydrogen

It was announced today (June 28) that the Saudi Arabian green hydrogen project, NEOM, has called on ABL Group’s Longitude Engineering to provide engineering support to Air Products to export green hydrogen.

Aimed at building the ‘world’s largest’ green hydrogen production facility from local onshore wind and solar power, the NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC), is planning to export hydrogen in the form of ammonia.

Air Products has appointed Longitude to support the engineering of an export jetty and the interface between ammonia tankers and the jetty, H2 View understands.

The contract, for which the price has not been disclosed, outlines for Longitude to carry out front end engineering design (FEED) through to support during construction, which is hoped to be completed by the end of 2024.

David Bignold, Managing Director of Longitude Engineering, said, “This project is at the cutting edge of the energy transition. It will harness the carbon-free energy generated from abundant local wind and solar resources to generate hydrogen via electrolysis, which will then be transformed into ammonia for global distribution.

“Green hydrogen is recognised as key to global decarbonisation efforts. The NEOM Green Hydrogen Company is truly the first to move into making green hydrogen generation at big scale a reality, and we are delighted to play a small role in this pioneering undertaking.

“The NEOM green hydrogen project will play a significant role in accelerating the global energy transition, and we consider it a vote of confidence to be asked to contribute towards realising this vision.”

It was announced in November 2021, that NEOM was set to feature a $5bn green hydrogen production project on the ‘world’s largest’ floating complex.

NEOM – Making a bold move toward the hydrogen economy

When Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman landed his helicopter on the edge of the Saudi Arabian desert beside the Red Sea a few years ago, it wasn’t rocky desert and empty coastline that he saw, but instead over 26,000km2 of inspiration. It was there he came up with ambitious plans for a $500bn futuristic mega-city powered by renewable energy: NEOM.

NEOM is a bold and audacious dream; a vision of what a new future might look – in fact, NEOM means ‘new future’. It’s an attempt to do something that’s never been done before, and it will be a place where entrepreneurship and innovation will chart the course for this ‘new future’. With flying cars and robotic domestic help, NEOM will be a home for people who dream big and want to be part of building a new model for sustainable living, working and prospering.
