Germany plans to announce a broad AI cooperation agreement with Nvidia at the Invest in Germany conference in Berlin next week. Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang are expected to unveil the partnership on Monday. The deal aims to support physical AI tools for robotics and autonomous vehicles, and to develop high-performance industrial AI models. Government funding in the hundreds of millions of euros would help rent computing capacity from Deutsche Telekom, with funds potentially drawn from the federal high-tech agenda. The initiative would be built around Germany’s SOOFI project for sovereign open-source foundation models. Nvidia confirmed Huang will be in Berlin next week for a speech and press engagement. The German government has not commented but previously stressed its commitment to strengthening Europe’s digital sovereignty.
Germany is preparing to announce a wide-ranging artificial intelligence cooperation agreement with Nvidia (NVDA) as early as next week, a move aimed at accelerating the adoption of AI across the country’s industrial base.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang are expected to unveil the partnership on Monday at the Invest in Germany conference in Berlin, according to a report from Handelsblatt citing government and industry sources. Huang is among the high-profile guests Merz has invited to the investment summit.
The agreement carries a dual objective. It would establish the foundation for physical AI tools used in training robots and autonomous vehicles, while also supporting the development of high-performance AI models tailored to industrial applications.
Government funding is expected to run into the hundreds of millions of euros. The state-backed seed financing would, among other things, be used to rent computing capacity from Deutsche Telekom. The funds could be drawn from reserves earmarked for the federal government’s high-tech agenda, the newspaper reported, citing government circles.
The initiative would be structured around the SOOFI project – Sovereign Open Source Foundation Models – which Germany launched last year to develop large AI models in collaboration with research institutions, universities, and AI companies.
Nvidia confirmed that Huang will be in Berlin next week, with a speech scheduled for Wednesday and a press engagement planned for Thursday.
The German government did not immediately comment. Last month, it said it remained committed to expanding AI capacity to strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty.
