Nvidia eyes expansive Taiwanese base to enhance global operations and compete with its Silicon Valley hub
NVIDIA, a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) chips, is expected to establish an overseas headquarters in Taiwan that will match the scale of its headquarters in Silicon Valley, USA.
The Taiwan Economic Times reported on the 23rd that “Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, is focusing on making Taipei City the hub for its overseas headquarters to fulfill the promise of establishing a headquarters for its employees in Taiwan.”
Jensen Huang, a Taiwanese-American, previously visited Taiwan in June for Computex, Asia’s largest information technology (IT) exhibition, and said, “We will establish a large-scale research and development (R&D) and design center in Taiwan within the next five years, employing at least 1,000 engineers,” adding that “We are looking for a large site for the center.”
The Economic Times noted that CEO Jensen Huang expressed the need for more than 3 hectares of land in discussions with relevant Taiwanese authorities at that time. It also added that NVIDIA has already rented about 60% (3rd to 17th floors) of the Luntai Yuqing Office Building in the southeastern part of Taipei City. However, it is reported that NVIDIA intends to establish its overseas headquarters in the Nangang district of Taipei, not just stop at leasing the building.
A Taiwanese official who previously visited NVIDIA’s headquarters in the U.S. said, “NVIDIA has an intention to establish its overseas headquarters in Taiwan,” noting that “They are looking for a site, and the area will likely expand significantly to be comparable to the scale of the headquarters in Silicon Valley, USA.” The Economic Times reported that if no suitable land is found in Taipei, nearby areas such as New Taipei City, Taoyuan, and Hsinchu, which are currently close to NVIDIA’s Taiwan branch and connected by high-speed rail, could also be targets for NVIDIA’s overseas headquarters.
