PM Modi to meet top CEOs in US, to highlight economic opportunities in India

On his 7th visit to the US since he took office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to strengthen India’s strategic partnership with the US, and will meet top chief executive officers to highlight the growing economic opportunities in India. He will also be attending bilateral meetings with Japan PM Suga Witter and Australia PM Scott Morrison.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Washington DC, US, on Wednesday, at the invitation of US President Joe Biden. During his trip, he will be meeting US Vice President Kamla Harris, aim to strengthen bilateral ties with Japan and Australia, and interact with top chief executive officers to highlight economic opportunities in India.

Modi has said he would highlight economic opportunities in India during his meetings with CEOs. As per the news agencies, two of them are Indian Americans — Shantanu Narayen from Adobe and Vivek Lall from General Atomics. Cristiano E Amon from Qualcomm, Mark Widmar from First Solar, and Stephen A Schwarzman from Blackstone are the other three CEOs.

As per news agency, PTI, Adobe CEO Narayen represents the IT and digital priority that the Indian government is pushing for. While General Atomics’ Lall is significant as the company pioneer in military drone technologies and also the world’s top manufacturer of military drones, which the US shares only with its key allies and partners.

India is in the process of procuring a significant number of drones for the three branches of its armed forces. It has also leased a few drones from General Atomics.

The meeting with chip giant Cristiano Amon assumes significance, given India’s push for the 5G technology to be safe and secure. The San Diego-based company creates semiconductors, software, and services related to wireless technology, the agency reported. India is looking for a major investment from Qualcomm.

For the use of solar power to meet India’s energy needs, PM’s meeting with Mark Widmar is important as First Solar is a leading global provider of comprehensive photovoltaic (‘PV’) solar solutions, which use its advanced module and system technology.

On the other days of his visit, Modi is scheduled to have two bilateral meetings with his Australian and Japanese counterparts — Scott Morrison and Yoshihide Suga. The meeting is expected to focus on cooperation between India, the US, Australia and Japan, and discuss Indo-Pacific trade, with the aim to improve economic and trade opportunities between the countries. As per various agencies, there is the possibility of a free trade agreement or a limited trade agreement.

Modi will also be addressing the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The Indian diaspora was present at the Andrews airbase, cheerfully welcoming the Prime Minister, as per a release by the Indian government.
