SoftBank Group Corp will become the first company to deploy NVIDIA Corp’s (NASDAQ:NVDA, ETR:NVD) new Blackwell-based chips in building Japan’s most advanced AI supercomputer.
Designed by SoftBank’s telecom division, the new device will power a broad range of local AI services using Nvidia’s DGX B200 system, with a second phase planned to use the more advanced Grace Blackwell chip.
The project reflects SoftBank’s determination to establish itself as a leader in AI, with founder Masayoshi Son highlighting AI as a critical focus for the company’s future.
Nvidia’s AI accelerator chips, essential for large-scale data processing, are highly sought after globally.
SoftBank, which held a small stake in Nvidia until 2019, secured early access to these new chips, underscoring its strategic shift.
Son joined Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at an AI Summit in Tokyo, where they discussed Japan’s ambitions to build a robust AI infrastructure.
The Japanese government has allocated ¥4 trillion to support the domestic semiconductor sector, a significant investment that Son argues should expand to ensure Japan’s competitiveness in AI and robotics.
