Will be based on Oracle Alloy

SoftBank Corp and Oracle are collaborating on a sovereign cloud offering in Japan.

The SoftBank-operated offering will be dubbed “Cloud PF Type A,” and based on Oracle Alloy, deployed in SoftBank’s Japan data centers.

SoftBank has data centers across eastern and western Japan to ensure redundancy and network resilience. The service is scheduled to launch in the firm’s eastern Japan data center in April 2026, followed by the western Japan data center in October 2026.

“We are delighted to collaborate with Oracle to offer a cloud platform that addresses the high-security standards in our data centers,” said Hayato Sakurai, executive vice president, SoftBank Corp.

“By integrating advanced technologies such as generative AI and high-performance GPUs, we will continue to address the diverse needs of our customers, empowering them to innovate, stay competitive, and drive Japan’s digital transformation.”

Oracle Alloy is a cloud infrastructure platform that enables other companies to build their own cloud offering. The solution is built on Oracle hardware and the company’s cloud stack. Users’ clouds are also compatible with Oracle’s own cloud, meaning hyperscale public resources are available for both service providers and customers.

“Oracle Alloy enables SoftBank to enhance its services by building and offering a new set of services based on the latest Oracle cloud, AI, and sovereign capabilities,” said Scott Twaddle, senior vice president, product and industries, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. “We look forward to strengthening our collaboration with SoftBank and accelerating the digital transformation of organizations in Japan.”

Cloud PF Type AI will further support GPU environments and will be capable of high-speed computation and generative AI workloads.

In 2024, Fujitsu and NTT Data both announced plans to develop Oracle Alloy-based sovereign cloud offerings in the country.

Oracle also has traditional Oracle Cloud Infrastructure cloud regions in the country, located in Tokyo and Osaka, which launched in 2019 and 2020, respectively. In April last year, the company said it would invest more than $8 billion in Japan over the next decade to meet growing cloud computing and AI infrastructure demands.

At the time, it said it would use the investment to expand its operations across Japan, from supporting Japanese engineering teams in addressing digital sovereignty requirements to increasing customer support in its cloud regions in Tokyo and Osaka.
