With the advent of AI and the rising popularity of tools like ChatGPT, the tech sector has driven a 30% rise in the S&P 500 since January 2022, compared to a 15% return for small-cap companies.
The biggest winner is Nvidia. Its chips, highly effective for AI training, have become essential for companies involved in machine learning and generative AI.
Since November 2022, Nvidia’s market cap has grown by $690 billion. In early November, it became the world’s most valuable company, ahead of Apple and Microsoft.

A major investor in OpenAI (the maker of ChatGPT), Microsoft has also seen its market cap grow by over $1.2 trillion. The list also includes Amazon (+$1.1 trillion), Apple (+$1.1 trillion), Meta (+$1.1 trillion), and Alphabet (+$845 billion), bringing the total gain to $8.4 trillion.
Combined, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Intelligent Cloud, and Google Cloud saw their could revenue top $250 billion in 2024, compared to less than $200 billion in 2022.
